Scan Directories without loading admin panel?

I've been reading on the forum of a way to automatically have it scan directories after an image is uploaded but there doesn't seem to be a solid way to do it yet.

I was wondering if it's possible to create a link for the user to click after they are done uploading their images.

If I use the link http://mysite.com/gallery/main.php?cmd=setup&var1=pics&var2=scan_dirs, it loads up the admin panel. Is there any other way that I can just run a script to scan the directories automatically after they click a link without the login credentials?

None of my users will have a specific phpalbum login id, but will have another user and password that gives them access to upload pictures. If anyone knows a way, or possibly, if I run a cron using http://mysite.com/gallery/main.php?cmd=setup&var1=pics&var2=scan_dirs, will that work?
